Lerryn ~ Cornwall ~ England |
|
Useful Information (We hope) The beautiful village of Lerryn lies on the River Lerryn, a tributary of the River Fowey. The parish is Lerryn and St.Veep where the church is to be found. We are three miles from the ancient town of Lostwithiel ( former capital of Cornwall) and about ten miles from either St.Austell ,Bodmin or Liskeard. The lovely port of Fowey is close by via a short ferry ride . Lerryn is home to a permanent population of about 300 which is swelled in summer by visitors to holiday homes and cottages. We still have a thriving Primary school with about 40 children attending. Amenities consist of The Post Office and Stores ,The Ship Inn and The Bric a Brac shop. We have a new village hall which is the focus of many events in the village. The award winning St.Veep Riding Stables are nearby where you can go for a hack out across the fields. You can visit two local Cider farms(Haye Farm and Penpol Farm) and buy good quality scrumpy. The village nestles in a valley and is surrounded by woodland downstream and farmland upstream. The woods either side of the river provide beautiful walks any time of year and are believed to have been the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame's "Tales of the Riverbank". The river is tidal and can be navigated easily at high tide to Fowey or Lostwithiel or one of the small villages along the estuary. At low tide, the stepping stones which link the two sides of the village are revealed. The road to Lostwithiel is carried by an ancient stone bridge over the river The river is home to a large variety of birds such as gulls, ducks, geese, swans, herons, egrets, kingfisher, buzzards and many many more. Of course there are many pretty smugglers coves dotted along the south coast which is 20 minutes away. And as if that wasn't enough, we are only 20 minutes away from the Eden Project which is definitely not to be missed.
